Swiss National Day by Lake Geneva

Swiss National Day

August 1st is Swiss National Day and luckily, I found myself by the shores of Lake Geneva to partake in all the fun and fireworks!  It’s a national holiday so nobody goes to work, none of the shops are open, everything closes for the whole weekend, so there’s nothing to do but to eat, drink and laze by the Lake.

There are large bonfires on the Lake ready to be lit in the evening…..

The shops are all closed and the town is really quiet!

I was staying in a beautiful little village called Commugny, near another beautiful village called Coppet, and decided to explore the area by bike.

Tips for visiting Coppet and Commugny:

  • There are loads of towns and Medieval villages to visit, both on the Swiss side of the lake and also over on the French side, you just need to get a ferry to take you across, which run every 20 minutes or so from Nyon.

  • Coppet is the main bus and train station – and buses from here take you to Commugny, Divonne-Les-Bains (over the border in France), Nyon and Gex.

  • Coppet also has trains that run to Geneva in 10 minutes, and further around the lake to Nyon, Montreux and Lausanne.
