What could be more luxurious and decadent than Afternoon Tea in The Dorchester, the crème-de-la-crème of afternoon teas, in the heart of Mayfair?

This was one of the best Afternoon Tea’s that I’ve had, and I’ve been to a few.  There’s a choice of The Traditional Afternoon Tea which is served in The Promenade on the ground floor, or the Vintage Afternoon Tea which is served on the Balcony overlooking the lobby by the Promenade.

The fabulous decor is traditional, decorated in pink, green and gold with towering palm trees and giant displays of yellow and green flowers.  The very plush sofas and cushions allow you to be seated in comfort and the tables are situated with lots of room between each one, so as not to feel cramped or aware of other people’s conversations.

We decided to go for the Vintage Champagne Afternoon Tea which began with a glass of Laurent Perrier Champagne, and then the attentive waitresses bring out the savoury finger sandwiches.  All the crusts are removed from these delicate, fresh baked savoury breads, and they are filled with smoked salmon, egg, chicken, ham and cucumber and cream cheese.

Next on the agenda are warm raisin and plain scones made from The Dorchester’s own 50 year old recipe. They are served with home made strawberry jam, marmalade and Devonshire clotted cream.

The final course is a tray of cakes and tartlets.  Among the delectable treats are delicate lemon tarts, raspberry macarons, a rich pink and yellow Battenburg, really lemony lemon drizzle cake and fruit and nut loaf.

After around two hours of eating amazingly delicious delicacies, we wandered slowly outside, where we found a fabulous display of sculptures in the beautiful gardens at the front of the hotel.
