My Annual Birthday Outing and Afternoon Tea at Fortnum & Mason‘s…
Today is my birthday and I’m being treated to my annual outing of Afternoon Tea, always to a place that’s very indulgent and horribly expensive in the centre of London! This year my treat takes me to the beautiful emporium of Fortnum & Mason, which is found in Piccadilly, a short walk from the tube station.
I love Fortnum’s, it’s like a mini Harrods without the chaos; an oasis of calm and tranquility in the hustle and bustle of Piccadilly Circus. The Afternoon Tea is found in the Diamond Jubilee Room, where you have to take the antiquated lift to the 4th Floor. You emerge into the sumptuous duck-egg blue and gold surroundings of the Waiting Room, with it’s resident pianist tinkling the ivories on a Grand Piano…. so elegant and sophisticated!
At your allotted time, you are escorted into the Tea Room to make yourself comfortable before the fun begins. The tables are beautifully decorated with the pale turquoise and gold F & M china, which you can find for sale in the department store below. There’s even a faux fireplace to warm up the cold January days and to make it even more cosy!
There are three Afternoon Teas to choose from; The Traditional Afternoon Tea, the High Tea or the Savoury Afternoon Tea. We opted for the Traditional Afternoon Tea with Champagne.
As with all afternoon tea, the waitress starts off by bringing you your selected tea and of course, as it’s a special occasion, Champagne! Then the sandwiches arrive…..there was coronation chicken, smoked salmon, beef, egg with poppyseed bread and cream cheese and cucumber. Needless to say, we had at least 2 rounds of sandwiches as they were really dainty!
Then came the cakes….warm scones with clotted cream and a selection of jams, and then pretty little fancies, blackberry macaroon decorated with gold leaf, a rose eclair with rose petal, mini chocolate torte, a marshmallow pistachio torte and a mango cream choux bun with chocolate sticks, all exquisitely presented like a work of art.
At this point we were completely stuffed… but there was an additional sideboard which had a beautiful display of cakes and gateaux if you fancied yet another morsel…..
Just look at these beauties…..!
Then I had a wonderful surprise! Two of the Waitresses came over singing happy birthday and brought me a massive piece of the chocolate torte with a candle. That was the icing on the cake and made me feel really special!
The waiters and waitresses were hard at work keeping everyone happy!
I also came across a little room off the main Tea Room where I found a fabulous display of tea caddies and tea pots. These were probably some of the original tea caddies that were used years ago to store different teas and now just used for display purposes.
We had a fabulous time in Fortnum’s and would highly recommend this as one of the best Afternoon Tea’s we’ve had, mainly due to the gorgeous array of cakes and sandwiches but also the surroundings which were really cosy, comfortable and calm! Plus we only had to walk down the stairs to the department store for shopping!
